Learn to Operator a Road-Rail Vehicle

This course is intended for people who are required to safely access the rail track to run a track vehicle within a defined worksite on a rail network during rail work activities. It includes performing pre-operational and post-operational checks, on tracking and off tracking vehicles, operating equipment, and completing required documentation. It encompasses the operation of all road/rail on-track vehicles.

Certification

Upon successful completion of all required assessments, students will be issued a:

Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment:
TLIC2054 Access rail track to run track vehicle within defined worksite
TLIC3045 Operate road/rail vehicle

There are no formal entry requirements, however in alignment with industry consultation and the job role expectations, the following is needed for course admission:
  • A valid Category 1 Rail Medical assessment
  • CPCWHS1001 Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry
  • TLIF0020 Safely Access the Rail Corridor
To ensure you are fully prepared and able to participate in your Operate Road-Rail Vehicle training session, please ensure the following are available and accessible on the day of training:
  • Access to a suitable Road-Rail Vehicle (RRV) for the duration of the practical training and assessment.
Access to rail track is required where you can demonstrate:
  • On-tracking the RRV
  • Operating the RRV in a safe and controlled manner
  • Off-tracking the RRV
These activities must be demonstrated a minimum of three (3) times during the training program to meet assessment requirements.

If you are unable to complete all practical demonstrations during the training session, you will be issued a logbook to record completion of the required attempts.

  • Completing this course can support further development and career progression within the rail industry and provide a pathway to TLI27221 Certificate II in Rail Track Vehicle Driving

This course is delivered through one day of classroom-based learning and includes knowledge assessments, an in-field demonstrations, and practical observations to evaluate both theoretical understanding and hands-on competence.

  • Knowledge assessments: Written tests to evaluate participants' understanding of the course material.
  • In-field activities: Participants complete tasks under the supervision of a qualified trainer
  • Practical observation assessments: Hands-on activities where participants demonstrate their skills in a controlled environment.

  • Safety and Compliance: Ensure you are trained to operate road-rail vehicles in accordance with rail safety and regulatory requirements, reducing the risk of incidents and ensuring alignment with network access protocols.
  • Practical Experience: Combines theory-based learning with hands-on practical training and vehicle operation in simulated or live rail environments, reinforcing confidence and job-readiness.
  • Industry Recognition: The course is recognised by major rail operators and infrastructure contractors, enhancing your employability
