Learn to Operator a Road-Rail Vehicle
This course is intended for people who are required to safely access the rail track to run a track vehicle within a defined worksite on a rail network during rail work activities. It includes performing pre-operational and post-operational checks, on tracking and off tracking vehicles, operating equipment, and completing required documentation. It encompasses the operation of all road/rail on-track vehicles.
Certification
Upon successful completion of all required assessments, students will be issued a:
Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment:
TLIC3045: Operate road rail vehicle
TLIC2054: Access rail track to run track vehicle within defined worksite
Entry Requirements
In alignment with industry consultation and the job role expectations outlined in the ARA National Plant Matrix, TIC Rail requires the following for course admission:
1. General and Medical Requirements
A valid Category 1 Rail Medical assessment, confirming fitness for work in a rail corridor
2. Statement of Attainment
Applicants must provide evidence of the following nationally recognised units of competency (or their superseded and equivalent versions):
To ensure you are fully prepared and able to participate in your Operate Road-Rail Vehicle training session, please ensure the following are available and accessible on the day of training:
1. General and Medical Requirements
A valid Category 1 Rail Medical assessment, confirming fitness for work in a rail corridor
2. Statement of Attainment
Applicants must provide evidence of the following nationally recognised units of competency (or their superseded and equivalent versions):
- TLIF0020 – Safely Access the Rail Corridor
- CPCWHS1001 – Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry
To ensure you are fully prepared and able to participate in your Operate Road-Rail Vehicle training session, please ensure the following are available and accessible on the day of training:
- Access to a suitable Road-Rail Vehicle (RRV) for the duration of the practical training and assessment.
- Access to rail track is required where you can demonstrate:
- On-tracking the RRV Operating the RRV in a safe and controlled manner
- Off-tracking the RRV

- Completing this course can support further development and career progression within the rail industry and provide a pathway to TLI27221 Certificate II in Rail Track Vehicle Driving
Delivery Mode
This course is delivered through one day of classroom-based learning and includes knowledge assessments, an in-field demonstrations, and practical observations to evaluate both theoretical understanding and hands-on competence.
