Develop the skills to safely operate medium and heavy rail-bound plant

This course is designed for individuals who need to safely access the rail track to operate a rail-bound machine within a defined worksite during rail maintenance or construction activities. Participants will learn how to conduct pre-operational and post-operational checks, stable self-propelled on-track vehicles safely, operate on-track equipment, and complete all required documentation. The course covers the operation of all medium/heavy types of rail-bound on-track vehicles in accordance with network safety requirements.

Certification

Upon successful completion of all required assessments, students will be issued a:

Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment
TLIC2054 Access rail track to run track vehicle within defined worksite
TLIC2058 Travel medium or heavy self-propelled on-track equipment

There are no formal entry requirements, however in alignment with industry consultation and the job role expectations, the following is needed for course admission:
  • A valid Category 1 Rail Medical assessment
  • CPCWHS1001 Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry
  • TLIF0020 Safely Access the Rail Corridor
  • TLIB0012 Maintain and use hand tools
  • TLIB2085 Apply track fundamentals
  • TLID0020 Shift materials safely using manual handling methods
  • TLIE1003 Participate in basic workplace communication
  • TLIF0025 Follow work health and safety procedures
  • TLIF2010 Apply fatigue management strategies
  • TLIU2008 Apply environmental procedures to rail infrastructure
To ensure you are fully prepared for the practical activities, please also ensure the following are available on the day of training:
  • Access to a suitable Rail-Bound Vehicle or Machine for the duration of the course
  • Access to a rail track location where you can operate the vehicle or machine. These practical activities must be demonstrated a minimum of three (3) times during the course.
If you are unable to complete all required demonstrations during the training session, you will be provided with a logbook to record and verify the completion of the remaining attempts in the workplace.

  • Completing this course can support further development and career progression within the rail industry and provide a pathway to TLI27221 Certificate II in Rail Track Vehicle Driving

This course is delivered through one day of classroom-based learning and includes knowledge assessments, an in-field demonstrations, and practical observations to evaluate both theoretical understanding and hands-on competence

  • Knowledge assessments: Theory tests to evaluate participants' understanding of the course material.
  • In-field activities: Participants complete tasks under the supervision of a qualified trainer
  • Practical observation assessments: Hands-on activities where participants demonstrate their skills in a controlled environment.

  • Safety and Compliance: Ensure you are trained to operate the rail bound machine in accordance with rail safety and regulatory requirements, reducing the risk of incidents and ensuring alignment with network access protocols.
  • Practical Experience: Combines theory-based learning with hands-on practical training and vehicle operation in simulated or live rail environments, reinforcing confidence and job-readiness.
  • Industry Recognition: The course is recognised by major rail operators and infrastructure contractors, enhancing your employability.
